About
Ashkan Farhadi, MD, is a highly regarded and experienced Board Certified gastroenterologist. He has a Master’s degree in Clinical Research and is a senior member of the American College of Gastroenterology. He has extensive experience as a researcher and professor at several major universities. Before joining MemorialCare, he was a clinical faculty at Rush University in Chicago, where he focused his clinical and research interests on common gastrointestinal problems, namely Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). He currently serves as the Director of Digestive Disease Center at MemorialCare Medical Group and volunteer faculty at the University of California, Irvine, where he teaches in the Gastroenterology Fellowship program. He is affiliated with Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center (OCMMC).
Dr. Farhadi has written, either solo or as part of a team, over 100 papers, articles and abstracts for various medical publications and journals. Additionally, he is the author of several books on Dynamic Diet, Positive Psychology and IBS that have been widely accepted and translated into five different languages. Dr. Farhadi holds six U.S. patents with six more pending, all for items designed to improve care.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Farhadi enjoys hiking, photography and spending time with his wife and children.

I haven't been lucky enough to visit Dr Farhadi in his clinic. I was one of his students in his homeland. He taught us honor and professionalism rather than gastroentrology. I clearly remind the days he left. It seemed so odd because he was the most successful and well-known GI man and even internist in his city although he had some envious colleages too. We had heared some rumors about the hard days he had in the US. These days we realise the reason behind his decision better. In our perspective his choice was because of honor and dignity. I have the greatest respect for him!

So much gratitude for Dr. FarhadiDr. Farhadi is incredible. I have so much respect and gratitude for him. He is truly an exceptional physician and specialist. He’s the only GI doctor who has spent the longest amount of time with me critically analyzing my medical history. He listens intently, is open-minded, honest and professional. After 2.5 years, I am in remission because of him. He demonstrates excellent bedside manner and makes me feel seen and heard, unlike previous experiences I have had. He correctly diagnosed me, is proactive vs reactive, and is actively guiding me to attain my personal health goals. I can’t compliment enough and wish that everyone who needs exceptional care is able to have Dr. Farhadi as part of their medical team.

Extremely Poor Experience – Would Not RecommendI had a very disappointing experience with Dr. Farhadi. From the beginning of the appointment, I explained that I’ve had chronic constipation for years—at times manageable with occasional laxatives, but recently worsening to the point where I now rely on them weekly, with decreasing effectiveness.Instead of offering a thoughtful or compassionate approach to explore possible root causes, Dr. Farhadi spent the majority of the visit explaining why my current efforts—such as hydration and dietary changes—would not help, without providing meaningful alternatives. It felt dismissive and unproductive.He performed a rectal exam without explaining what it would involve beforehand. As a healthcare provider myself, I understood what to expect, but it was concerning that he didn’t walk me through the procedure. I can only imagine how distressing that would be for someone without medical knowledge, as it is a very personal and invasive assessment.After the exam, he abruptly left the room, offering no time for me to ask questions or discuss anything further. He ordered an abdominal X-ray, which he explained to me showed no major blockage but only showed stool buildup which he told me would explain my discomfort. I thought this was somewhat silly that I could have easily told him, as that was the entire reason I sought his help.His follow-up message recommended Miralax and attempting to use the restroom at scheduled times. When I reminded him that I came to his office because I’d already been relying on laxatives and wanted to find a root cause to avoid long-term dependence, he simply replied that most cases of constipation are idiopathic. This felt once again like more negligent care. While some cases may be idiopathic, reaching that conclusion after a single static image and no further testing (e.g., for motility issues, SIBO, microbiome imbalance, or inflammation) is not thorough care.Overall, Dr. Farhadi showed poor bedside manner, left no time for patient conversation, and took a superficial approach to a complex issue. I would not recommend him to anyone seeking thoughtful or investigative gastrointestinal care.
