Volunteers are a vital part of Long Beach Medical Center and Miller Children's & Women's Hospital Long Beach care teams, providing compassionate services and support to our patients, families, and staff. Our generous volunteers offer their time, effort, and talents in a variety of assignments that supplement the professional staff, enabling us to provide the best services and care to our patients and families. We have over 600 volunteers throughout our hospital, assisting as guest greeters, escorts, messengers, cuddlers, etc.

We are always looking for new volunteers, who are enthusiastic, qualified and committed individuals that can uphold our MemorialCare values of Accountability, Best Practices, Compassion, and Synergy. Upon review of your application, the Volunteer Office will contact you to schedule an interview.

Application Process For Adults

  • Volunteers must complete the application form and send it to LBVolunteerServices@memorialcare.org
  • Upon review of the application, selected applicants will be invited to participate in an interview.
  • If assignment is mutually agreed upon, you will need to complete the following:
  1. Background check (Required if you are 18 or over. Must have a Social Security number to be processed)
  2. Two (2) TB tests (Administered without charge by LBM/MCHLB Employee Health Nurse)
  3. Influenza Vaccination is recommended during Peak Flu Season (Administered without charge by LBM/MCHLB Employee Health Nurse)
  4. Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination is recommended.

After completing above mentioned process, you will be asked to:

  1. Attend Volunteer Services Orientation (offered once a month)
  2. Purchase a volunteer uniform at a cost of $23.00.
  3. Complete and show competence in your service area training(s) as related to your duties.

Teen Volunteer Program

Are you a high school student looking to explore careers in healthcare, gain real world experience, and give back to your community this summer? Our Hospital High School Summer Volunteer Program provides an engaging, structured opportunity for students to learn, serve, and grow in a professional hospital environment.

About the Program

Our 8 week summer program offers students the chance to support various hospital departments while developing teamwork, communication, and service skills. Volunteers may assist in both clinical and non clinical areas, depending on department needs.

Program Dates

Monday, June 29, 2026 – Friday, August 21, 2026 
(Last day may vary based on your school’s return-to-school date.)

Eligibility

To apply, students must:

  • Must be in High School grades 9-12
  • Commitment to an 8-week session
  • Be able to meet all program requirements and deadlines

Orientation

Students accepted into the program must attend a mandatory orientation on Monday, June 15 at 3:30 PM (by invitation only).

There is no make-up date for orientation.

Students accepted into the program will receive an email with instructions to submit the following required documents prior to orientation. Required documents should be submitted upon acceptance into the program.

  • Varicella immunization record
  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) immunization
  • Documented proof of a negative TB test within in the last 6 months is required. If unable to provide we can provide a TB test free of cost at orientation (Guardian must be present to administer TB test)

Assignments

  • Department placement is based on hospital needs. While preferences are considered, assignments are not guaranteed.
  • Once your schedule is submitted, changes cannot be made due to limited availability.

Applications will open in May. Please check our website for updates on the exact launch date. Due to high interest in the program, applications will be accepted online until all available spaces have been filled.
